Troll Ascetic

Troll Ascetic was first introduced in the 2003 Mirrodin expansion for Magic: The Gathering, designed by Wizards of the Coast to feature the game's unique 'hexproof-adjacent' mechanic. It was later featured in the 2012 Duels of the Planeswalkers core set, which served as a digital entry point for new players to learn the mechanics of the game. The card represents a creature type rooted in fantasy tropes, emphasizing durability and resilience on the battlefield.

The artwork for the original iteration was commissioned from artist Greg Staples, who rendered the troll with an emphasis on its regenerative nature and rugged, swamp-dwelling aesthetic. Within the competitive community, the card became a staple of 'Rock' and midrange strategy decks during its prime because its ability to target itself while remaining immune to opposing spells made it a frustratingly difficult threat for opponents to remove from the board.
