Troll Ascetic

Troll Ascetic was released in 2003 as part of the Mirrodin expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Developed by Wizards of the Coast, the set was designed by Mark Rosewater and his team to revolve around an artificial, metal-infused plane, shifting the aesthetic focus of the game toward artifacts and complex mechanical synergies. This particular card was created to provide a resilient green creature that could interact with the set's equipment-heavy environment by offering a built-in regeneration ability and a form of hexproof, then known as 'shroud.'

The card was illustrated by the artist Puddnhead, whose work is characterized by a distinct, textured style often found in early 2000s fantasy art. His depiction of the troll focuses on the rugged, earthy nature of the creature as it stands in contrast to the metallic surroundings of the Mirrodin plane. Upon its debut, the card was widely received as a powerful tournament staple, becoming a defining piece for green-based control and aggressive decks throughout its tenure in the Standard format due to its durability against direct removal spells.
