Where it came from
Trove of Temptation was released in 2017 as part of the Ixalan expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The set centers on a vibrant, Mesoamerican-inspired plane defined by exploration, pirate fleets, and ancient civilizations, and this card serves as an artifact representing the riches that drive the set's central conflict. It was designed to mechanically embody the greed and allure of the plane's hidden treasures, offering a steady flow of resources to the player who can maintain board control.
The card’s illustration was created by artist Titus Lunter, who was tasked with visualizing the seductive, dangerous nature of Ixalan’s golden hoards. Lunter’s work on the piece leans into high-contrast lighting to emphasize the glimmer of gold amidst a dark, overgrown environment. The design was well-received by players for its thematic resonance with the set's adventure-focused identity, functioning as a flavorful centerpiece that captures the high-stakes atmosphere of the Ixalan narrative.
