Where it came from
Released in September 2017 as part of the Ixalan expansion, this Island card is a foundational element of the set's thematic exploration of a lush, Mesoamerican-inspired jungle plane. Wizards of the Coast designed Ixalan to feature a world dominated by warring factions, including pirates, dinosaurs, and merfolk, requiring the basic lands to ground the player in the vibrant, prehistoric geography of the setting.
The artwork for this specific card was commissioned by artist Jung Park. Tasked with capturing the exotic and untamed nature of the plane, Park utilized a vivid color palette and sweeping vistas to emphasize the isolation and grand scale of the island's landscape. The design was received favorably by the Magic: The Gathering community, often cited for its lush aesthetic that complements the set’s exploration-heavy mechanics.
