Where it came from
True Believer was released as part of the Onslaught expansion set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game in 1996. The card was designed as a white enchantment, reflecting the set's focus on the war between the forces of Dominaria and the entity known as Onslaught. Its mechanic, which grants the player hexproof, was a tactical response to the increasing popularity of targeted spells in the competitive meta of the mid-nineties.
The card features the distinctive illustrative style of artist Dan Frazier, whose work is highly recognizable from the game’s early years. Frazier aimed to capture a sense of spiritual fortification and individual resolve, aligning with the card's function of protecting the player from direct magical assault. Upon release, it was regarded as a niche but effective tool for control decks, eventually finding its place as a classic piece of utility within the broader Magic: The Gathering library.
