Trumpeting Armodon

Trumpeting Armodon was released in 1997 as part of the Tempest expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. This set was designed as the first installment of the Rath Cycle, a block that introduced a more cohesive narrative focus and mechanics such as shadow and buyback to the game. It was conceived during a period when Wizards of the Coast was aggressively expanding the game's lore and setting, moving away from the loose, high-fantasy vignettes of the early years toward the more structured environmental storytelling that defined late nineties Magic.

The card was illustrated by Gary Leach, an artist known for his contributions to the comic book industry and his distinct, often gritty illustrative style. Leach provided a depiction of the Armodon that leaned into the creature's massive, elephantine biology, focusing on its imposing scale and heavy armor plating. While the card is a standard uncommon, it remains a notable example of the era's creature design, which prioritized tactile, grounded representations of fantasy beasts over the more abstract or ethereal designs that emerged in later sets.
