Where it came from
Spinal Graft was released in 1997 as part of the Tempest expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. It represents the set's focus on the tension between the plane of Rath and the invasion forces of the Phyrexians, exploring themes of biological modification and forced evolution. The card was designed as a thematic representation of the Phyrexians' parasitic and transformative nature, granting creatures mechanical augmentation at a cost.
The artwork for the card was provided by artist Ron Spencer, known for his distinct, visceral style that defined much of the aesthetic of the 1990s era of the game. Spencer’s illustration depicts the brutal, biomechanical integration process that characterizes Phyrexian lore, aiming to evoke a sense of body horror that resonated with the set's dark, industrial tone. It remains a notable example of the early illustrative direction that established the darker visual identity of the multiverse.
