Trusty Machete

Trusty Machete was released in the 2009 Magic: The Gathering set Zendikar, an expansion themed around high-adventure exploration and dangerous, untamed wilderness. The card was designed as an uncommon equipment artifact, intended to provide a straightforward, efficient buff to creatures during the set’s aggressive gameplay environment. Mechanically, it echoes the classic tropes of adventure fiction, emphasizing the necessity of reliable gear when traversing hostile, uncharted lands.

The card’s illustration was provided by artist Christopher Moeller, who captured the item as a weathered, practical tool rather than an ornate weapon. Moeller’s design aesthetic for the set focused on functionality and grit, ensuring the machete appeared perfectly suited for hacking through the overgrown, trap-laden landscapes characteristic of the Zendikar plane. It was well-received by players for its balance and utility in Limited formats, where simple, repeatable equipment was often a staple for deck building.
