Where it came from
The Zendikar Plains, collector number 231a, was released in 2009 as part of the Zendikar expansion for Magic: The Gathering. This set introduced the innovative 'full-art' basic land treatment, a design decision aimed at emphasizing the untamed, adventurous landscape of the titular plane. By extending the landscape illustration to the edges of the card, the design team moved away from the traditional text-box-heavy borders, allowing the art to dominate the visual experience.
The illustration for this specific card was created by Vincent Proce, a prominent artist known for his atmospheric and immersive work within the game. Proce was tasked with capturing the vibrant, jagged aesthetic of Zendikar, utilizing high-contrast lighting and sweeping vistas to convey a sense of scale. Upon release, the full-art lands were received with significant enthusiasm by the player base, quickly becoming iconic staples that have since influenced subsequent set designs and collector trends.
