Provenance

Where it came from

Tundra was released in 1994 as part of the Revised Edition, the third core set for Magic: The Gathering. As one of the original ten dual lands, it was designed to provide efficient mana fixing by tapping for either white or blue mana. The card was carried over from the earlier Alpha and Beta sets, maintaining the mechanical role of land cards that allow players to access two different color identities without the drawback of entering the battlefield tapped.

The artwork for Tundra was illustrated by Christopher Rush, one of the most prominent artists in the game's early history. Rush opted for a serene, frost-covered landscape that visually represented the card's color pairing. At the time of its release, the card was received as a fundamental building block for competitive deck construction, though it remains controversial in the broader history of the game due to the power imbalance created by dual lands in early formats.
