First strike (This creature deals combat damage before creatures without first strike.)

Where it came from
Tundra Wolves first appeared in the Fifth Edition of Magic: The Gathering, released in 1997. This core set was designed to consolidate and update the game's rules and card pool, bringing together various cards from previous expansions under a unified framework. It serves as a classic representation of the game's early aesthetic and mechanical balancing efforts.
The artwork for this particular iteration was provided by illustrator Susan Van Camp. Her contribution reflects the fantasy art style prevalent in mid-90s trading card games, focusing on a straightforward, evocative portrayal of the creature. Upon its release, the card was received as a functional, low-cost white creature, valued primarily for its role in limited play environments and its place in the broader ecosystem of creature-based combat.
