Provenance

Where it came from

Animate Dead first appeared in the Alpha set of Magic: The Gathering in 1993, designed by Richard Garfield as a staple enchantment for the black color identity. Its function is to return a creature card from a graveyard to the battlefield, a mechanic that defines the 'reanimator' archetype. The Fifth Edition printing, released in 1997, served as a foundational core set release that maintained the card's essential role in competitive and casual play while standardizing its rules text for the modern era.

The artwork for the Fifth Edition printing features an illustration by Anson Maddocks. Known for his macabre and gothic sensibilities, Maddocks captured the visceral horror of necromancy through his signature style. The imagery was intended to evoke the unsettling nature of reviving the dead, a theme that has remained consistent throughout the card's numerous reprints and has made it a quintessential example of the game's early dark fantasy aesthetic.
