Where it came from
Turn to Frog was released in 2014 as part of the Magic 2015 core set. Mechanically, the card serves as a blue utility spell that temporarily transforms a target creature into a 1/1 frog without abilities, stripping away power, toughness, and static effects. The card was designed as a thematic and functional reprint of a concept that appeared previously in the Magic: The Gathering ecosystem, aiming to provide blue players with a reactive, polymorph-style removal tool that emphasizes the color's propensity for transformation and humor.
The card's illustration was crafted by artist Kev Walker, a long-time contributor to the game whose work is characterized by a distinctive, often gritty aesthetic. In this piece, Walker depicts a rather disgruntled-looking individual mid-transformation, leaning into the whimsical yet disruptive nature of the spell. Upon its release, it was received as a flavorful, if situational, limited-format staple that captured the playful side of blue magic while maintaining the technical precision required for competitive play.
