Provenance

Where it came from

The Ornithopter is one of the most iconic artifacts in Magic: The Gathering, originally debuting in the 1993 Alpha set. As a zero-cost creature, it has functioned as a cornerstone for combo decks throughout the game's history, valued for its ability to enter the battlefield without a mana investment. The Magic 2015 version, featuring collector number 223, was a reprint that brought this classic utility card back into the standard rotation for a modern era of players.

The artwork for this specific 2015 iteration was illustrated by Volkan Baga. Baga maintained the mechanical, bird-like aesthetic established by previous versions while utilizing a more polished, contemporary digital painting style. His design emphasizes the fragility and intricate clockwork nature of the construct, capturing the essence of the card as a delicate but essential engine for complex tactical strategies.
