Where it came from
The Turntimber Ranger was released in October 2009 as part of the Zendikar expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The set was designed to focus on the themes of exploration, land-based mechanics, and the treacherous, adventure-filled landscape of the plane of Zendikar. As a Rare green creature with the Ally creature type, it was intended to serve as a centerpiece for tribal strategies, leveraging the set's signature mechanic that triggered whenever an Ally entered the battlefield under a player's control.
The card's art was illustrated by Dan Scott, who was tasked with depicting the unique, vertical wilderness of the Turntimber region. Scott employed a lush, forest-heavy aesthetic that emphasizes the towering, gravity-defying plant life characteristic of the plane. Upon its release, the card was well-received by players focusing on Commander and casual formats, as its ability to create a Wolf token whenever an Ally enters the battlefield allows for potent synergies and recurring board presence within green-based decks.
