Where it came from
Tymaret, Chosen from Death was released in early 2020 as part of the Magic: The Gathering expansion Theros Beyond Death. This set marked a return to the Greek mythology-inspired plane of Theros, focusing on the underworld and the god of the dead, Erebos. Tymaret appears as an undead champion, reimagined from his original appearance in the 2013 Theros set to reflect his role as the caretaker of the Returned in the underworld.
The card was illustrated by Johannes Voss, who utilized a moody, atmospheric palette to emphasize the character's necrotic nature and his connection to the mask-wearing society of the Returned. Within the game's competitive landscape, the card was designed to interact with graveyard mechanics, providing players with a utility-focused creature capable of disrupting opposing strategies while maintaining a presence on the battlefield.
