Where it came from
Tymaret, Chosen from Death, first appeared as part of the Theros Beyond Death expansion in 2020. Representing the Returned—zombies from the underworld of the Theros plane—Tymaret serves as the king of the Returned. The design intent was to capture his role as a relentless gravedigger, utilizing his ability to exile creatures from graveyards to weaken opponents while bolstering his own resilience on the battlefield.
The Multiverse Legends version, numbered 148, was released in 2023 as part of the March of the Machine set. This series featured iconic legendary creatures from across Magic: The Gathering's history, reimagined with a distinct, frame-breaking aesthetic specific to the plane of Theros. The illustration focuses on the character's skeletal, mask-adorned visage, leaning into the gothic horror aesthetic that characterizes the Returned of the underworld.
