Where it came from
The Tyrant of Kher Ridges was released as part of the 2022 Magic: The Gathering expansion set, The Brothers' War. The set serves as a narrative reimagining of the foundational conflict in the game's lore, pitting brothers Urza and Mishra against one another in a devastating mechanical war. The design of this card reflects the set's thematic emphasis on massive artifacts and dragons, capturing the colossal scale of the conflict through the lens of a powerful red creature card.
The artwork for this card was created by artist Fajareka Setiawan. The illustration captures the imposing, jagged aesthetic of the Kher Ridges, a region known in lore as the home of the dragon Shiv. The visual direction aimed to emphasize the dragon's overwhelming power and connection to the volcanic landscape, and the card was received by players as a signature representative of the set's high-mana, aggressive mechanical playstyle.
