Where it came from
Tyvar, Jubilant Brawler was introduced in the 2023 Magic: The Gathering expansion Phyrexia: All Will Be One. This set centers on the return of the Phyrexians and their attempt to corrupt the multiverse, with Tyvar Kell, a planeswalker from the plane of Kaldheim, appearing here to lend his physical prowess and ability to animate creatures to the resistance effort. The card mechanics emphasize his role as a brawler who can bypass summoning sickness, reflecting his warrior-like temperament and affinity for elves and creatures alike.
The card’s illustration was crafted by artist Johannes Voss, who has been a staple in Magic: The Gathering for over a decade. Voss aimed to capture Tyvar’s vibrant, energetic nature, juxtaposing his green-mana-fueled vitality against the bleak, mechanical backdrop of New Phyrexia. Upon release, the card was well-received by competitive players for its efficiency in graveyard-recursion strategies, quickly becoming a foundational element in various deck archetypes within the Pioneer and Modern formats.
