Where it came from
Mindsplice Apparatus was released in 2023 as part of the Phyrexia: All Will Be One set for Magic: The Gathering. The card represents the biomechanical, assimilation-focused aesthetic of the Phyrexians, a recurring antagonistic faction in the game's multiverse. Mechanically, it serves as an artifact that gains oil counters to progressively reduce the mana cost of instant and sorcery spells, embodying the Phyrexian theme of relentless mechanical optimization.
The artwork was illustrated by Dominik Mayer, whose signature high-contrast, angular, and industrial style was chosen to emphasize the cold, calculated nature of the Phyrexian regime. The design process focused on translating the 'compleation' concept into a visual form, balancing the intricate, unsettling machinery of the apparatus with the set's broader motif of technological perfection achieved through organic-mechanical integration.
