Ugin, the Spirit Dragon

Ugin, the Spirit Dragon was originally designed by Magic: The Gathering lead designer Mark Rosewater for the Fate Reforged expansion, released in 2015. The character serves as a central pillar of the game's lore, functioning as an ancient, colorless planeswalker who commands the power of manifest spirits. This particular version was released as part of the Secret Lair Drop Series, a specialized line of limited-availability cards featuring unique, high-concept artwork intended to appeal to collectors and fans of specific artistic aesthetics.

This specific iteration of the card features illustration by artist Kelogsloops, known for a distinctive, flowing style that emphasizes ethereal movement and vibrant, watery textures. In this commission, the artist sought to capture the solemn and detached nature of Ugin, distancing the character from the utilitarian or aggressive designs found in standard set printings. Upon its release in the Secret Lair series, the card was received positively by the community for its thematic departure from traditional Magic art styles and its contribution to the prestige of the collectible promo format.
