Where it came from
Ugin's Binding was released in 2024 as part of the Modern Horizons 3 expansion for Magic: The Gathering. As a set designed specifically for non-standard formats, Modern Horizons 3 introduced powerful reprints and new mechanical concepts intended to integrate into the Modern format. This particular card draws inspiration from the narrative arc of Ugin, the Spirit Dragon, a central figure in the multiverse's lore who is known for his mastery of colorless magic and his role in the conflict against the Eldrazi.
The card was illustrated by Joshua Raphael, who employed a visual style consistent with the ethereal and crystalline aesthetic associated with Ugin's magic. The design focuses on the thematic concept of a binding or containment spell, utilizing the colorless mana identity that defines Ugin’s presence in the game. Upon its release, it was noted by players for its technical utility and its ability to provide flexible board interaction, serving as a meaningful expansion of the colorless card pool available to deck builders.
