Where it came from
Ulrich of the Krallenhorde was released in 2016 as a mythic rare double-faced card in the Magic: The Gathering set Eldritch Moon. Designed as the legendary leader of the werewolves on the plane of Innistrad, the card was created to provide a long-awaited commander option for players focusing on werewolf tribal mechanics. Its introduction followed years of community requests for a high-powered legendary werewolf that could effectively lead a deck built around the game's transform mechanic.
The card was illustrated by Johannes Voss, who utilized a moody, atmospheric style to capture the transition from Ulrich’s human form to his monstrous alpha state. The design was intended to balance the aggressive, red-green color identity of the creature with the tactical complexity required to flip between its two sides. While the card was highly anticipated, its competitive reception was mixed, as many players felt its impact on established formats was more limited than its mythic rarity suggested.
