Where it came from
Ulrich of the Krallenhorde was released in 2016 as part of the Eldritch Moon expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The card was designed as a legendary werewolf creature, a highly anticipated addition for players who favored tribal themes. The promo version, marked as 191s, features alternate artwork that highlights the dual nature of the character, capturing the transition between human form and the Krallenhorde alpha.
The card was illustrated by Johannes Voss, whose work is characterized by a high level of atmospheric detail and dramatic lighting. Voss sought to emphasize the primal, imposing scale of the character, particularly in its transformed state. Upon release, the card was received with significant interest by the Commander format community, as it provided a long-awaited legendary leader for werewolf-themed decks, despite debates regarding its competitive efficiency in faster formats.
