Where it came from
Umara Wizard // Umara Skyfalls was released in 2020 as part of the Zendikar Rising expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The card utilizes the double-faced technology introduced in this set, which allows players to choose between a spellcasting wizard on the front and a land card on the back, providing tactical flexibility during gameplay. This design choice was intended to mitigate the common frustration of drawing too many lands in the late game or not enough in the early game.
The card was illustrated by Johannes Voss, a long-time contributor to the game known for his expressive, atmospheric fantasy style. His work on this piece captures the vibrant, adventure-oriented aesthetic of the Zendikar plane, emphasizing the magical nature of the character while maintaining the mechanical clarity required for tournament play. Upon release, the card was well-received by limited-format players for its utility and versatility.
