Where it came from
Umbris, Fear Manifest was first released as part of the Innistrad: Crimson Vow set in 2021 before being featured in the Secret Lair x Dan Frazier showcase drop. This particular iteration, collector number 2324, arrived as part of a specialized series intended to revisit iconic art styles or themes within the Magic: The Gathering multiverse. The design choice for this run emphasized a distinct, stylized aesthetic that departs from traditional card frame artwork, aiming to offer collectors a visually unique perspective on the card's nightmarish subject matter.
The card was designed by Wizards of the Coast as a legendary creature centered around the horror-themed mechanical archetype of growing in strength based on the number of cards in an opponent's exile zone. The artist selected for this specific Secret Lair drop was tasked with capturing the essence of a 'Fear Manifest' entity, utilizing evocative imagery to convey the card's psychological threat. It was generally received by the player base as a powerful commander-focused utility piece, praised for its synergy with exile-based strategies and its dark, thematic cohesion.
