Where it came from
Umori, the Collector was originally introduced in the Ikoria: Lair of Behemoths set in 2020 as a companion character, a mechanic designed to encourage specific deck-building constraints by granting players access to a powerful card from outside their main deck. The Multiverse Legends version, numbered 192z, is a special promotional printing released in 2023 as part of the March of the Machine set, which showcased iconic creatures from across Magic: The Gathering’s history utilizing a distinctive stained-glass frame aesthetic.
The artistic direction for the Multiverse Legends series was intended to unify characters from disparate planes under a singular, ornate visual style reminiscent of cathedral windows. Designed to emphasize the creature's eerie, symbiotic nature as a gelatinous predator that collects organic matter, the illustration captures its amorphous, multi-eyed form. Upon release, this specific frame variant became highly sought after by players and collectors for its unique aesthetic appeal and its utility as a powerful commander in the game’s popular Commander format.
