Where it came from
Umori, the Collector was released in 2020 as part of the Ikoria: Lair of Behemoths set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. The creature functions as a companion, a mechanic that allows players to access a card from outside their deck during a game if specific deck-building restrictions are met. This card specifically rewards players for filling their decks almost exclusively with cards of a single permanent type, reflecting the creature's thematic role as an Ooze that consumes everything in its path.
The art for this promo version was created by Daarken, a frequent contributor to the Magic: The Gathering franchise. His design emphasizes the surreal, mutating aesthetic of the Ikoria plane, portraying Umori as a massive, amorphous entity blending into its environment. The card was received with significant interest within the community due to the companion mechanic's high power level and its subsequent impact on competitive formats, leading to balance adjustments in tournament play shortly after the set's release.
