Where it came from
Undergrowth Champion was released as part of the Magic: The Gathering Foundations Jumpstart set, which serves as an introductory product designed to bring both new and returning players into the game. Originally debuting in the 2015 Battle for Zendikar set, the card was reprinted here to support the set's focus on foundational mechanics and accessibility, reflecting the franchise's strategy of maintaining legacy card viability within modern drafting environments.
The card features an illustration by Dan Dos Santos, who captured the creature's essence as a resilient, earthen guardian emerging from the forest floor. The design intent centers on the landfall mechanic, creating a synergy where the creature scales in power as the player places lands onto the battlefield, paired with a damage-prevention ability that rewards thoughtful resource management.
