Where it came from
Unesh, Criosphinx Sovereign was introduced in the 2017 Magic: The Gathering expansion Hour of Devastation, representing a mythical creature from the plane of Amonkhet. The card was designed as a rare engine for Sphinx-tribal decks, utilizing a unique card-selection mechanic that requires opponents to divide revealed cards into two piles, a classic design trope known as a 'Fact or Fiction' variant. The promotional version, bearing the collector number 52s, features distinct gold-stamped set symbols and alternate frame treatments typically distributed through official Wizards of the Coast organized play events.
The artwork for this piece was crafted by Chase Stone, an illustrator known for his dramatic, high-fantasy style. Stone focused on capturing the imposing, regal presence of the Sphinx as it oversees its domain. Within the broader context of the set, the card was received as a flavorful addition to the lore of Amonkhet, serving as a powerful centerpiece for players interested in blue-aligned control and synergy strategies. Its design emphasizes the intellectual and deliberate nature of the Sphinxes within the game's narrative.
