Where it came from
Unfriendly Fire was released in 2017 as part of the Ixalan expansion for Magic: The Gathering. Set on a plane dominated by Mesoamerican-inspired civilizations, pirates, and dinosaurs, the card reflects the set's central conflict involving a race for the lost city of Orazca. It serves as a classic direct-damage burn spell, mechanically designed to reward players for navigating the high-stakes combat environment of the set.
The card’s illustration was created by artist Igor Kieryluk, whose work often focuses on dynamic, high-fantasy action scenes. Kieryluk’s design captures the volatile nature of the spell, focusing on the abrupt and destructive interaction between fire magic and the card's target. The piece was well-received for its clear visual storytelling and consistency with the aesthetic identity of the Ixalan block, which prioritized bold colors and themes of exploration and territorial aggression.
