Where it came from
Unnatural Restoration was released in early 2023 as part of the Phyrexia: All Will Be One expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The card belongs to a narrative cycle depicting the brutal transformation of the Multiverse under the influence of the Phyrexians, a race of biomechanical horrors. Mechanically, the card reflects the set's focus on the graveyard and the proliferation of poison counters, illustrating the twisted nature of Phyrexian rebirth where organic life is forcibly repurposed into synthetic components.
The artwork was created by illustrator Games Workshop veteran Igor Kieryluk, who has been a frequent contributor to the game. His illustration captures the unsettling aesthetic of New Phyrexia, employing a high-contrast style that emphasizes the jagged, metallic melding of flesh and oil. The piece was well-received by players for its ability to concisely communicate the set's central theme of corruption and reconstruction within a single frame.
