Provenance

Where it came from

Unstable Frontier first appeared in the Conflux expansion of Magic: The Gathering, released in early 2009. The set focused on the shard-based Alara plane, a world shattered into five distinct fragments that were being forcibly rejoined. The card was designed as a utility land that provided color fixing during this mechanically complex era, intended to help players navigate the multicolored demands of the Alara block's draft and constructed environments.

The card features artwork by Christopher Moeller, who captured the surreal, fractured landscape of a world in the process of merging. His illustration emphasizes the volatile energy of the Shards as they bleed into one another, reflecting the set's central conflict. While it serves a functional role in gameplay, it is appreciated by collectors for its role in illustrating the specific aesthetic shift of the Conflux set, later appearing in 'The List'—a curated selection of reprints—to reintroduce the card to a new generation of players.
