Where it came from
Untamed Hunger was released in early 2016 as part of the Oath of the Gatewatch expansion for Magic: The Gathering. As an enchantment within the set, the card was designed to support the game's mechanics surrounding the Eldrazi, a faction of cosmic, plane-consuming entities that alter the landscape of the game. Its inclusion in the set reflects the narrative shift toward the struggle to defend the plane of Zendikar from these otherworldly invaders.
The artwork was created by illustrator Deruchenko Alexander, who utilized a dark, visceral aesthetic to capture the parasitic nature of the Eldrazi's influence. The card’s design—granting a creature increased power at the cost of forcing it to attack—was intended to mechanically represent the corrupting, insatiable drive of the Eldrazi. Upon its release, it was primarily utilized as a common-rarity tool for players drafting the set, valued for its ability to push aggressive damage in Limited formats.
