Where it came from
Unwinding Clock was first introduced in the 2011 Magic: The Gathering expansion New Phyrexia. The card reflects the mechanical, systematic nature of the Phyrexians, designed to allow players to untap their artifacts during each opponent's turn. Its inclusion in The Brothers' War Retro Artifacts set pays homage to the game's deep history, featuring the specialized 'retro' frame style that echoes the aesthetic of the original 1993 card releases.
The card’s design highlights the utility of mana rocks and artifact-centric strategies, encouraging a more reactive playstyle. While the original art by Volkan Baga emphasizes a complex, gear-driven apparatus consistent with Phyrexian themes, the Retro Artifacts series utilizes the iconic artifact border design to ground the card within the broader historical visual identity of the game. It remains a staple for players focusing on heavy artifact synergy.
