Where it came from
Unwinding Clock was first released in the 2011 Magic: The Gathering set New Phyrexia. The card was designed as a rare artifact that rewards players for building decks heavy on mana rocks and other artifacts, allowing them to untap their non-land permanents during every opponent's turn. Its inclusion in The Brothers' War Retro Artifacts series in 2022 served as a thematic nod to the set's focus on the mechanical history of the Magic multiverse, reprinting the card with a vintage-style border that evokes early 1990s card designs.
The art for this iteration maintains the technical, intricate aesthetic associated with the artifact-heavy theme of the set. While the original illustration focused on the physiological horror inherent to the Phyrexian setting, the retro-framed version integrates seamlessly into the legacy of Urza’s mechanical inventions. It was well-received by players who focus on the Commander format, as the card facilitates complex, multi-turn strategies by ensuring players have constant access to their artifact abilities.
