Where it came from
Urza's Workshop was released as part of The Brothers' War Commander set in 2022, serving as a thematic nod to the pivotal conflict between the brothers Urza and Mishra that defined the lore of Magic: The Gathering. As a land card designed for the Commander format, it functions as a modern iteration of classic Urzatron-style lands, rewarding players for assembling specific pieces of Urza’s legendary manufacturing facilities. The card’s design seeks to capture the industrial scale of the Sylex Blast era, grounding the player in the artificer-heavy atmosphere of the set’s historical timeline.
The illustration, credited to Titus Lunter, emphasizes the immense, metallic scale of the workshop, using expansive, cold tones to convey the magnitude of the site. The artistic direction for the set focused on capturing a retro-futuristic aesthetic inspired by 1980s pulp science fiction, a stylistic choice that resonated well with long-term fans of the series. Upon its release, the card was widely received as a functional and flavorful addition to artifact-themed decks, providing a strategic tool that reflects the intricate mechanical themes inherent to Urza’s character.
