Skullclamp

Skullclamp was originally introduced in the 2004 Mirrodin block, designed as a tool for card advantage that famously underwent last-minute development changes. While intended to be a moderate equipment card, the decision to swap its power-buffing ability for a negative modifier made it unintentionally powerful, allowing players to sacrifice small creatures to draw multiple cards with ease. This design oversight led to its swift banning in several formats and solidified its reputation as one of the most efficient, albeit controversial, engines in the history of the game.

The version from The Brothers' War Commander set features new artwork by artist Johannes Voss. As part of a supplemental release focused on the lore of the Artificer Urza, this iteration retains the mechanical identity of the original while situating it within the visual aesthetic of the set's retro-futuristic, war-torn setting. Like many reprints in Commander-focused products, this specific printing serves to provide wider access to a staple card that remains a cornerstone of artifact-based decks in the multiplayer format.
