Where it came from
Uvilda, Dean of Perfection // Nassari, Dean of Expression was released in 2021 as part of the Strixhaven: School of Mages expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The card represents the dual leadership of the Prismari College, an institution within the game's lore dedicated to the intersection of art and elemental magic. The dual-faced design was specifically crafted to embody the duality of the college's philosophy: the technical precision of Uvilda and the emotional, spontaneous expression of Nassari.
The card was illustrated by Magali Villeneuve, a prominent artist in the fantasy gaming space. Villeneuve sought to contrast the cool, calculated aesthetic of Uvilda with the fiery, chaotic energy of Nassari. Upon its release, the card was received as a complex engine for spellslinging decks, noted by players for its ability to bridge the gap between resource management and explosive late-game utility.
