Valakut Awakening // Valakut Stoneforge

Valakut Awakening, a double-faced card from the Zendikar Rising set, was released by Wizards of the Coast in September 2020. It was designed as part of a cycle of modal double-faced cards, which were created to offer players increased strategic flexibility by allowing them to choose between a spell or a land play during each turn. This design approach was intended to mitigate the common frustration of being mana-screwed or flooded in the Magic: The Gathering card game, providing a versatile utility that fits into many deck archetypes.

The artwork for the card was illustrated by Johannes Voss, whose contributions to the franchise are known for their atmospheric quality and expressive lighting. Voss sought to capture the fiery, tectonic nature of the Valakut region, a recurring location in the game's lore centered on volcanic activity. Upon its release, the card was well-received by the competitive community for its card selection capabilities, particularly in formats like Commander and Modern, where its ability to trade unwanted cards for new ones proved highly efficient.
