Where it came from
Valki, God of Lies // Tibalt, Cosmic Impostor was introduced in the 2021 Magic: The Gathering expansion Kaldheim. The set drew heavily from Norse mythology, reinterpreting traditional deities and lore through the lens of the Magic multiverse. Within this narrative, Valki is a mischievous trickster god whose true identity is revealed to be the planeswalker Tibalt, an infamous agent of chaos.
The card’s design utilizes the double-faced card mechanic, allowing players to choose between casting the low-cost creature Valki or the high-cost planeswalker Tibalt. This duality was crafted to reflect the character's deceptive nature and manipulative tactics. Upon its release, the card sparked significant discussion within the competitive community due to its interaction with cascade spells, which allowed players to bypass the high mana cost of the Tibalt side and deploy a powerful late-game threat during the early turns of a match.
