Where it came from
Valki, God of Lies // Tibalt, Cosmic Impostor was introduced in the 2021 Magic: The Gathering expansion Kaldheim. As a double-faced card, it reflects the set's thematic focus on Norse mythology, portraying the trickster god Valki on the front and his true form, the devil Tibalt, on the reverse. This design mechanical choice was intended to represent the fluid, deceptive nature of the character within the game's multiverse narrative.
The card was illustrated by Johannes Voss, who captured the sinister and manipulative personality of the character through dark, ornate detailing and a sharp, high-contrast aesthetic. Upon release, the card received significant competitive attention due to its interaction with specific mana-value mechanics, which led to high usage in various constructed formats. It remains a notable example of modern card design that blends thematic storytelling with complex gameplay mechanics.
