Vampire Bats

Vampire Bats was originally released in the 1994 expansion set Legends before being reprinted in the 1995 Fourth Edition base set. This card was part of the early years of Magic: The Gathering, a period defined by Richard Garfield’s initial vision for a customizable trading card game. During this era, the card design focused on top-down flavor, with the bat’s mechanics mirroring the parasitic nature of the creature by allowing players to pump its power through the expenditure of life points.

The artwork for the Fourth Edition printing retained the original illustration by Quinton Hoover, a prolific artist whose contribution to the early game helped establish its distinct gothic-fantasy aesthetic. Hoover’s style was noted for its expressive lines and dramatic use of shadow, which became synonymous with the game's formative look.
