Where it came from
Vampiric Tutor was originally released in the 1996 Visions expansion, quickly becoming a staple in competitive Magic: The Gathering due to its ability to search for any card for a minimal cost. By 1999, Wizards of the Coast introduced the World Championship Decks product line, which replicated the specific sixty-card deck lists used by finalists in the world championships. This particular version of the card was included in the deck piloted by Jakub Slemr during the 1997 World Championship.
The card features the iconic artwork by Ash Arnett, which depicts a haunting, dark figure reaching out from the shadows, perfectly capturing the visceral aesthetic of the black mana color identity. Because the World Championship Decks were printed with unique gold-bordered backs and signatures on the face of the cards, they are not tournament-legal, which originally led to a lukewarm reception from competitive players. However, they have since become highly sought after by collectors for their historical snapshot of professional play during the late 1990s.
