Provenance

Where it came from

The Varmint token was released in 2024 as part of the Magic: The Gathering expansion Outlaws of Thunder Junction. This set drew heavily from Western genre tropes, featuring a fantasy multiverse heist theme. The token is designed to represent a creature type created by specific cards within the set, such as Outcaster Trailblazer, which encourages players to track the presence of these small, elusive beasts on the battlefield.

The artwork, created by illustrator Karem Qumsieh, emphasizes the rugged, desert aesthetic of the plane. Qumsieh’s design captures a nimble, rodent-like creature that fits the set’s thematic focus on the wildlife found in the frontier-inspired Thunder Junction. The token was received as a standard utility piece, prized by collectors for its consistent thematic integration and the vibrant, dusty color palette that defines the expansion's visual identity.
