Vault of Champions

Vault of Champions was released in 2020 as part of the Commander Legends expansion, the first Magic: The Gathering set specifically designed to be drafted in the popular Commander multiplayer format. As a member of the cycle of 'crowd lands,' it was crafted to provide mana fixing for multiplayer games, functioning effectively when a player has two or more opponents. The design philosophy behind this cycle was to provide high-utility lands that support the social, social-contract-driven nature of Commander play without becoming overly dominant in one-on-one formats.

The card features artwork by illustrator Johannes Voss, who utilized a lush, high-fantasy aesthetic to evoke the grandeur of a triumphant gathering place. The visual language centers on shimmering, golden architecture that reflects the card's theme of shared victory. Upon its release, the card was well-received by the player base for its strategic versatility and aesthetic appeal, quickly establishing itself as a staple in multicolored deck builds where access to both white and black mana is essential for consistent performance.
