Where it came from
Vedalken Squirrel-Whacker was released in 2022 as part of the Unfinity set, a silver-bordered expansion for Magic: The Gathering designed to prioritize humor and non-traditional gameplay mechanics. This card specifically parodies the game's long-standing creature types and tropes, fitting into the set's retro-futuristic, carnival-inspired theme. Like many cards in the Un-series, it was crafted to provide a lighthearted experience that challenges the standard rigid rules of play.
The card was illustrated by David Sladek, who adopted a whimsical, exaggerated art style intended to capture the absurdity of the interaction between the Vedalken—a blue-aligned race known for their logical, blue-skinned nature—and the small, woodland creatures that are a recurring motif in the game. Upon its release, it was received primarily as a novelty item, celebrated by fans of the franchise for its tongue-in-cheek nod to the game's history of complex creature interactions.
