Where it came from
The Vedalken Squirrel-Whacker was released in 2022 as part of the Unfinity set, a silver-bordered-style expansion for Magic: The Gathering designed by Wizards of the Coast. This set was conceived as a lighthearted, humorous departure from the game's traditional lore, focusing on a retro-futuristic space carnival theme. The card specifically leans into the 'Un' sets' history of bending conventional game rules by introducing mechanics that involve physical interactions and whimsical scenarios.
The artwork, illustrated by veteran fantasy artist Svetlin Velinov, depicts the card's titular Vedalken character in a humorous, high-energy struggle with squirrels in an arcade-style setting. Velinov’s design was intended to capture the chaotic and colorful aesthetic characteristic of the Un-series. Upon its release, the card was received as a niche comedic addition, valued by players for its novelty and the specific mechanical interactions it provides within casual, unconventional play environments.
