Where it came from
The Vendilion Clique was originally printed in the Morningtide expansion in 2008, representing a legendary trio of faeries from the Lorwyn setting. This specific version, appearing in the 2015 Modern Masters set, was designed as a high-power reprint intended to bolster the availability of essential staples for the Modern format. The card features artwork by Cynthia Sheppard, who aimed to capture the ethereal, mischievous, and predatory nature of the creatures by utilizing a vibrant, high-contrast color palette that emphasizes their flight and sharp, crystalline aesthetic.
Upon its inclusion in the Modern Masters 2015 set, the card was widely welcomed by tournament players who had long sought easier access to this versatile blue card. The Vendilion Clique is highly regarded for its unique ability to provide both information and disruption, allowing a player to look at an opponent's hand and force them to exile a key card. It remains a fixture in competitive Magic: The Gathering history, praised for its mechanical efficiency and its thematic representation of the complex, shifting politics of the fae folk.
