Vengeful Ancestor

Vengeful Ancestor was released in 2021 as part of the Forgotten Realms Commander set, a supplemental product designed to integrate the iconic lore of Dungeons & Dragons into the Magic: The Gathering ecosystem. The card functions within the Goad mechanic, which reflects the chaotic nature of battle by forcing opponents to attack each other rather than the player. This design choice serves both as a strategic deterrent and as a flavorful nod to the unpredictable encounters common in tabletop role-playing sessions.

The artwork was illustrated by Wisnu Tan, who sought to capture the spectral, wrathful essence of a vengeful spirit haunting the living. The design emphasizes a sense of looming dread, utilizing muted tones and ethereal visual effects to convey the Ancestor’s status as a restless entity. Upon its release, the card was well-received by the Commander community for its utility in multiplayer games, where it provides a consistent, repeatable way to manage enemy board states.
